(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Armed groups targeted the mosque with mortars and machine-guns, damaging parts around the main gate as well as the prayer hall.
The incident occurred as the insurgents were trying to take control of the Islamic site.
The attack was, however, repelled by the Syrian Army and several insurgents were killed and more injured during the clashes.
The mosque is currently under the control of the government forces, officials said.
The Grand Umayyad Mosque is the largest and oldest mosque of Aleppo and listed as a UNESCO world heritage site.
